[edit] The YouTube Project

In our CMC conversations we have spent a great deal of time covering virtual communities in their many incarnations. YouTube is a unique entity in this mix. Initially developed as a video sharing platform, the content posted by members have proven a powerful connector in generating conversations, formalizing online relationships and providing legacy experiences. YouTube is also widely considered to be an experimental device foreshadowing the next big revolution in media distribution to the public. The irony is this: who are the distributors? Unlike traditional media produced by the few and consumed by the many, YouTube levels the playing field in many ways. "Stars" and popular clips are no longer subject to prerequisites of high production value and juggernaut marketing companies, but instead rise due to popular opinion and collective action. As a member of the YouTube community, it's time to end your lurker status and become one of its newest content producers.

[edit] Getting Started

  • The class will be divided evenly into production crews consisting of at least one student with video recording and editing equipment. We're not focusing on high-production here so even video-capable digital cameras will do! The important aspect of this assignment is to study the community relationships within YouTube. Feel free to make arrangements to share equipment across groups.
  • In the process of making your videos, you may find referencing the YouTube clips we've posted in the discussion forums. Think of the lists as a brief but decent catalog of people's favs to peak your curiosities and get your creative juices flowing.

[edit] Responsibilities

  • Create a YouTube account for your group. One account per group is sufficient. Post your group's YouTube page in the discussion forums under "YouTube accounts".
  • Record and post your videos to your YouTube account and make sure each is set for public viewing. You are required to produce four videos to complete the assignment. These four videos should come together somewhat as a series. You can focus on any topic you like: a 4-part comedy series, a collection of political commentaries, reactions or reenactments of other YouTube content / internet memes. There are no restrictions on content, just make sure they are cohesive.
  • The videos must have a minimum length of 1 minute each, but make sure each is long enough to complete the idea of your video in an acceptable form. Going beyond the minimum time is more than encouraged.
  • If one of your group members has more experience with video editing, you are encouraged to try some fancier, non-linear video techniques, etc.
  • Most important - Be creative!
